Emily Hermant Longlisted for the 2026 Sobey Art Award
We are thrilled to share that Emily Hermant has been longlisted for the 2026 Sobey Art Award. Organized by the National Gallery of Canada and funded the Sobey Art Foundation, the Sobey Art Award recognizes Canadian artists who are at a critical juncture in their careers, and whose work reflects on the contemporary moment, both nationally and globally.
Working with recycled communication wires and data cables, Hermant creates intricately woven works derived from glitch-altered digital imagery, transforming ephemeral information systems into tactile, luminous surfaces and forms that evoke a soft collapse of communications technologies. A recipient of funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, her practice examines the materiality and afterlives of communications technologies.
Emily Hermant has a forthcoming solo exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery this summer as the inaugural artist in the museum’s new Vancouver Now! series, which highlights Canadian artists to watch. Her exhibition will run August 7–November 22, 2026.
