Greg Girard (b. 1955, Canada) is internationally recognized for his photographs documenting the social and physical transformation of cities over the past five decades. Working extensively throughout Asia, particularly in Hong Kong and Shanghai, his images examine urban life at moments of profound change, creating an enduring record of places on the cusp of disappearance.

Girard is the author of numerous acclaimed publications, including Phantom Shanghai (2007), which The Independent named one of the ten greatest photography books ever published, City of Darkness Revisited (2014), and Under Vancouver, 1972–1982 (2017), now in its fourth printing. In 2024, his Under Vancouver photographic series inspired Lucie and Luke Meier’s Jil Sander Spring/Summer 2025 collection, with his images appearing as prints on garments and informing the collection’s palette and atmosphere.

This year The Polygon Gallery presented Greg Girard, the artist’s first major career survey, bringing together photographs spanning more than five decades of his practice.

Girard’s work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Vancouver Art Gallery, and M+, Hong Kong, among numerous public and private collections. Girard is represented by Monte Clark Gallery, Vancouver.
