With their tactile surfaces and compelling colours, Jonathan Syme’s sculptural paintings highlight materiality. His formal compositions represent various pathways and responses in an ongoing dialogue with abstraction, and evoke a sensation of process and movement.
Syme’s decisive framing of the works plays with the tradition of historical painting presentation, and the sculptural moldings become an integral element of the works. Painted in bold and unconventional colours, they become a bridge between the craftsmanship and tradition of framing and the lexicon of abstract painting.
Jonathan Syme received his BFA from the Alberta College of Art and Design, and currently lives and works in Vancouver, BC. He has exhibited at CSA Space, the Goethe Institute FIT Container, the New Edward Gallery (Calgary), 304 Days, and numerous other venues.
