Scott McFarland’s hyperrealistic images of an abandoned ship comprises photographs taken during winter nights in early 2020 and winter 2021, exemplifying his signature approach of layering multiple exposures. McFarland’s capturing of shipwrecks and tragedies at sea is in conversation with Romantic painters such as J.M.W. Turner and Caspar David Friedrich, whose depictions sought to remind us that nature consistently has the upper hand when challenged by human short-sightedness and attempts at mastery.
