Vilhelm Sundin
Elsewhere

September 6 to October 6, 2018

Inspired by painting, literature and street photography, Vilhelm Sundin’s work situates mundane events in a fictional universe. Elsewhere presents a series of video-installations that invite the viewer to be an observer of scenes that unfold over a passage of time; a lit-up street corner is divided, like an island, from a city during a power outage; the transition from day to night empties a park; seagulls struggle to fly through a snowstorm. The scenes move between realism and the imaginary as they struggle to maintain an authentic representation of the documented spaces. Elevated by cinematic tropes, Elsewhere introduces everyday moments we were never present for.

Sundin holds an MFA from Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, and he completed his Bachelor of Media Arts at Emily Carr University. Sundin’s work was recently shown at the Polygon Gallery’s inaugural exhibition N. Vancouver, and he won the Philip B. Lind Emerging Artist Award in 2016. After moving from his native Sweden in 2006, Vilhelm Sundin now lives and works in Vancouver, BC.
