Monte Clark is pleased to present One Thousand Years, an exhibition of new sculptures by Alex Tedlie-Stursberg, on view from March 1st through March 29th, 2025.

This exhibition extends Stursberg’s exploration of his Float series—sculptures cast in bronze from found polystyrene marine wreckage. His latest works build on this concept, imagining how objects drift through the ocean’s endless cycles, accumulating stories and bearing witness to the passage of time. Through this transformation, they mirror humanity’s own evolution.

By recasting discarded materials in bronze—a symbol of permanence—Stursberg elevates them into monuments to modern existence. His work transforms the mundane into the mythological, inviting viewers to reflect on the transient nature of time, value, and human impact.

The title One Thousand Years refers to the estimated time it takes for a parcel of water to complete a full cycle through the Global Conveyor Belt—an oceanic current system that circulates water across the planet. This continuous cycle regulates ocean temperatures and underscores how the Earth’s interconnected systems operate on timescales far beyond human perception.

Indeed, a millennium is a difficult span of time to grasp. In a thousand years people and the planet will have shifted in unimaginable ways. It will likely be a world that is unrecognizable to us. Though the future is unknowable, the choices we make today will undoubtedly shape it. If humanity endures what artifacts will define our civilization?

Imagine an object entering the Global Conveyor Belt. As it drifts and transforms over centuries, what will it witness? What stories will it carry across the vastness of the ocean?
